An interviewer asked famous mountain climber, Reinhold Messner, what sorts of adventures spark his imagination and spirit – what is it that he is looking for in his adventures.
His answer is remarkable!
Paraphrased, he says…
I am seeking the unknown in myself – not the unknown outside. The unknown outside does not exist anymore on Earth because we know everything. On the Earth, there is nothing left to conquer.
But, through wilderness, through wild places, difficult places, dangerous places, I can go deeper and deeper into the unknown layers of my own being.
And knowing how you behave in case of the possibility of dying in the next moment, how you behave in case of big danger, of total weakness – this is interesting to me.
There is a lot more to this interview, but this part really stood out to me!
