Who is this Dixie person anyway?

For some months now, I’ve been a member of a Backpacking group on Facebook called, Homemade Wanderlust.  For most of that time I’ve been a lurker, quietly absorbing whatever backpacking wisdom they put out.

But you know what a glut of information FB can be.  It’s like drinking from a firehose!  You end up skimming and skipping and FB eventually figures out that you’re not paying all that much attention so their mysterious algorithms start throttling that feed.

Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, two or three posts on Homemade Wanderlust caught my attention when they all dropped the name, “Dixie.”  The name didn’t ring any bells, so that’s when I made what seems to have become an infamous faux pas!

I posted a note asking, “Who is Dixie?” And I was SWAMPED with responses ranging from laughing emojis to angry-faces, and a spate of comments, like…

“How can you NOT know Dixie?”

“Why are you even a member of this group if you don’t know Dixie!?”

Crikey!

Then, my cell phone started blowing up with texts from my hiking buddies.

“That wasn’t you who didn’t know Dixie, was it?”

“I would have never thought you didn’t know Dixie!”

I have to admit, I did fan the flames a tiny little bit by referring to them as the “Cult of Dixie,” but an admin was good-natured and finally explained the mystery of Dixie.

Who is this Dixie person anyway?

Dixie is the trail name of an Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail thru-hiker named Jessica Mills. She hails from Alabama, which makes it even harder to believe I didn’t know who she was.  I can practically see Alabama from my back door!

Homemade Wanderlust is the name of her FB page and group and her YouTube channel, all of which went viral as she posted frequent updates from the trails documenting her rise from noobie to trail expert.  If you are interested in backpacking and you like southern accents, you ought to check out her really entertaining and informative feeds.

I suppose all of that makes the response I got make more sense.  It’d be like some random person reading through www.RoamingParkers.com or joining our Roaming Parkers FB group and then posting, “Who is this ‘Pat’ guy anyway?”

How is it that I came to be a member of Homemade Wanderlust without knowing that?  I guess FB just promoted it to me because of my interest in hiking and backpacking so I signed up.

How did I manage to stay a member for almost a year without knowing who Dixie is? I don’t know.  I guess I’m just oblivious.

But you can bet your bottom dollar that I know who Dixie is now!
