March 2018 is going to be a busy and fun-filled season of our lives!
Riverboat Dinner Cruise at New Orleans
The first weekend of March, the Roaming Parkers are going to do a Dinner cruise on the Steamboat Natchez, paddling out of the Toulouse Street Wharf in New Orleans. Complete with New Orleans cuisine and live jazz! We will also probably be staying at some fancy-schmancy hotel, so stay tuned for a review or two!
Al Scheller Hiking trail at Vicksburg Battlefield Park
For the second weekend of March, some of the Roaming Parkers will be hiking the Al Scheller Memorial Trail at Vicksburg Battlefield Park.
This 12.5-mile hike was laid out by a former seasonal Ranger at Vicksburg Battlefield Park. Scheller loved hiking with Boy Scouts and he designed this backwoods hike through the interior of the park to help them hone their land navigation skills.
Vicksburg is always a strenuous hike because of the rolling terrain, and this time will be little different. We expect rough terrain but cool weather.
Backpacking at Topisaw Creek
Topisaw Creek in southwest Mississippi is one of our favorite Scouting destinations. Because the land on both sides of the creek is privately-owned and there is no public access, there is never any problems with litter or drunk paddlers – just clean, beautiful nature.
The only problem with Topisaw creek is that it is often too shallow to canoe, but a kayak will usually make it through most places a canoe won’t. But this time we will not be paddling at all. We are taking a 15-mile 3-day, 2-night pack camping trip and we will be accompanied by a forester and a retired biologist as our expert guides! Can’t wait!
