What changes your sense of taste!?

american_airlines-airline_meal-2005.jpgWho would have thought it?  It has been known for a long time (just not by me) that sounds can affect your sense of taste.

In this recent article at Atlas Obscura, author Paula Meija discusses how sounds can affect taste, including…

  • More people than expected choose tomato juice on airplanes even when they don’t drink it at home.
  • The loud sounds of jet engines can reduce the intensity of the flavor of Coca-Cola.
  • High pitched tinkling can enhance sweetness.
  • The sound a food makes when you bite it is an important cue to how fresh and appealing the food seems to you.

…and more! Some of these hints might help out when presented with airline food.
